Craig Miller “I Give My Short Stay an A+++” Several days into our annual snowmobile trip on March 7th, I was riding my snowmobile with a group of friends near Shotgun in Island Park area. Along the way I climbed and then descended a rather shear hill face apparently with a bit too much speed no realizing the steep downhill angle I had to negotiate. While I remember the ascent up the hill, the next memory I have is of two friends removing my helmet and asking me to lay still. I recall the very concerned face of my friend Janet who is a seasoned snowmobile rider of many years. I’m in my 3rd year of learning to ride. Obviously, I had sustained a loss of consciousness that lasted around 2 minutes. My snowmobile was on its side next to me. I estimate the height of the hill at 25 feet....

We had an exciting week in the Lab at Madison Memorial Hospital, as we celebrated Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. We kicked off the week by joining with The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, Virtual 5k.  We gathered on the track Madison Jr. High on Monday night to walk and run our 5k… in Lab coats of course. We had lab games going all week long- “Guess how many Pedi Tube in the beaker”, “What did the doctor order” and Chair races in the hall. We have some very fast and serious competitors in the Lab.   “The best dressed tube” and “Find the Golden Tube” were games shared with the whole hospital. Jeneal and Cherie created a cute poster that was placed by the pneumatic tube systems throughout the hospital demonstrating how the analyzer would like the patient labels applied to blood tubes. Every day we hid several special gold blood...

Madison Memorial Hospital Earns 2017 Qualis Health Quality Award Madison Memorial Hospital earned the Award of Excellence from Qualis Health for the hospital’s “Quality-Driven Medication Reconciliation” program. “Medication safety is crucial during times of care transition,” said Mikel Barr, RN, Director of Quality at Madison Memorial. “But when a patient is admitted to the hospital, it is not uncommon for their primary care physician to be uninvolved with their care. In cases like these a patient may experience interruptions in medications for chronic conditions, variations in the dosage of those medications, or even be prescribed new medications. These changes can result in flare-ups of the chronic condition, may affect the patient’s ability to recover from the acute condition for which they were hospitalized, or cause dangerous drug interactions.” To address this disconnect, Madison Memorial Hospital piloted an innovative medication reconciliation program, with the aim of improving patient safety by preventing adverse drug...

To our valued patients, The following message is intended for those of you that purchase insurance on Idaho’s health insurance exchange (www.yourhealthidaho.org), especially those of you who subscribe to Blue Cross Qualified Health Plans (insurance on the exchange and individual plans). This message does not pertain to those of you who participate through your employer’s Blue Cross group plan or Blue Cross managed Medicare. Open enrollment on the health insurance exchange ends on January 31, 2017. At this point, we are not sure if there is going to be a repeal or if a repeal and replace is waiting in the wings. Either way, we want to share some things we have learned regarding health insurance sold on the exchange that affects our communities:   If you were enrolled on the exchange in 2016, you may have been automatically renewed under the same insurance plan you had last year. If...

Physician Privilege Determination at Madison Memorial Hospital Rexburg, Idaho – December 12, 2016. For the community’s information, Madison Memorial Hospital provides the following information to the public about how the hospital determines which physicians and other healthcare providers practice medicine within the hospital, and the process by which those decisions are made. Permission to admit patients to the hospital, or to provide treatments or perform procedures, is granted in the form of “privileges.” As this implies, practicing within the hospital is not a right, nor a guarantee, but a privilege, which must be applied for by the practitioner. Practitioners of various specialties are granted permission to provide treatments only within the specific scope of their training, education, and clinical competence, which must be proven prior to the granting of privileges. Applications for privileges are reviewed by a body of physician representatives, who are elected by their peers. After receiving information...
