Rexburg, ID – In lieu of their receiving an annual appreciation gift from Madison Memorial Hospital, Healthcare providers have requested to have the funds donated to Sugar Salem High School. This was the second year local physicians have donated their appreciation gift funds to our local schools to help supply their science labs with upgraded equipment.  Sugar-Salem High School was the recipient of $1800.00 to help purchase a DigiVu 3.0 research digital microscope. The school will also be able to fund dissection specimens. This microscope will allow the images to be saved on computers allowing them to be studied beyond just the time they are being viewed.   “On behalf of MMH, we thank our local physicians for their generosity to our schools.  These funds have been a great boost to their science programs, says Crystal Watson, Medical Staff Manager at MMH.  Dr. Steven Lofgren represented the Medical Staff by presenting Sugar-Salem High School with the...

Heart Screening Helps Shari Last Year during Heart Month, February, Shari felt completely healthy. However, she decided to participate in the health screening at the hospital. The results showed a problem. After additional testing was done by her doctor, she was immediately admitted to the hospital for two days and two nights to start thinning her blood. Her heart was beating irregularly because of a p-wave problem that can lead to atrial fibrillation (AF). AF increases the heartbeats and heart attacks and strokes. She would like to tell those folks that don’t want to get pre-screening, that their quality of life will improve by preventing strokes and heartaches by participating in preventative care screenings. In retrospect, the only thing that she realized was that she was a little more tired than usual. To correct Afib, doctors will try to get her heart to beat regularly. If the medication prescribed doesn’t help, then her heart could be shocked. From the...

This past week the hospital lost a total of 61.3 pounds which brings our grand total to 346.6 pounds lost. The winner of week 2 wanted to leave us with some tips on what they did to continue to lose the weight this week. She walks the corridors of the hospital morning, noon, and night. She also was more active than usual. To finish it off,  the disciplined restriction of carbs contributed to the weight loss. By doing these 3 things our winner this week was able to drop 2.8% of their body weight. After collecting each individual’s personal goal, it has been decided that the goal for the entire contest will be 1803 pounds. Each week we will keep everyone updated on the status of our goal. Let’s keep it up! If we meet our goal, Public Relations and the Wellness Program will throw a party. Creative with Exercise Bands Free Exercise Class and...

Madison has started a new, great program! Club Ortho gives patients a smoother program for those scheduled to have hip, knee, or shoulder surgery. It is designed to make each patient’s entire surgical experience a seamless and problem free.

Surgery works with Case Management who works with Physical Therapy who all work with the Doctors to ensure that our orthopedic patients have a highly collaborated and optimally cared for experience. Programs like this are often seen in larger metropolitan hospitals, but rarely in one of our size.  This program guides the patient from the decision to have surgery all the way through recovery and return to optimum health. The first class was held last Monday (1/26/2015) and was very well received.

When you see them, give Case Management a “way to go” pat on the back. Programs like this will make for happier, healthier patients at Madison Memorial Hospital.

Our CEO, Rachel Gonzales, has been appointed to the Idaho Hospital Association (IHA) Board. She will be serving in that capacity as an American Hospital Association (AHA) Representative to the Regional Policy Board. We congratulate Rachel on this three-year appointment, which began on January 1, 2015. Rachel is looking forward to this opportunity and will represent Madison Memorial very well. Rachel has also been listed a second time as one of the “50 Rural Hospital CEO’s to Know”. Becker’s Hospital Review publishes this list which features some of the most impressive leaders dedicated to advancing healthcare in small towns and rural communities. Individuals included on the list include CEOs and administrators of hospitals located outside of a major metropolitan areas or healthcare hubs. Tauna Madison Memorial Hospital has lost 285.3 pounds this week among our 81 Biggest Loser contestants. Our biggest loser so far is Tauna with a whopping 7.2% drop in her body mass. How did she do it, you may ask. In her own words, Tauna explained her actions below: 1. After my first weigh-in last week, I had a visit with Gwen from our Education department. Gwen helped me understand the percentage of good carbohydrates, portion sizes, and protein that I should eat. Gwen also gave me further instructions that she will share at “The Secrets to Winning the Biggest Loser Contest” this Friday from 12:00  – 12:45 in the meeting room. Bring your lunch, and come ENJOY.  2. I love food, cooking, and I love Pepsi. I have decided to drop Pepsi and replace it with water. Occasionally, if I feel a headache coming, I will have drink 1/2 of a diet Pepsi.   3. I have used the following tools to track my efforts....
