New Year | New Life A New Life for this year’s New Year’s Baby joined us. Her Name is Cece. She is a perfect, beautiful, big baby girl with the ability to do so much with her life. The family is happy that Cece arrived with a healthy mother through a natural delivery, even though her big brother came by c-section. This big brother is very excited to have her home. She is surrounded by a loving family and is being spoiled. Her mother stated that she is a tough little cookie, and hopes that she will be this strong all of her life. She also wants her to find and always be herself. Her dad is glad that she is healthy and happy. He is already planning hunting trips with her.  With this new year, let’s be inspired, and take big steps towards our dreams and our goals. One goal that can help you accomplish everything else in your...
Madison Furthers Physician Collaboration The first three hospital/practices in Rexburg were owned and run by physicians. Harvard graduate Dr. Joseph Walker had a building that served the general public until 1925. Opening shortly after Dr. Walker’s practice, Dr. Sutherland ran the Sutherland Hospital on the top floor of the Rexburg State Bank. In 1924, Dr. Harlo Rigby, and his wife Elsie built a hospital that averaged 400 cases annually for 29 years. Madison Memorial Hospital first opened its doors in 1951 as a 29-bed facility with just 23 employees. During its first 24 hours of operations, the hospital had 1 birth, 1 death, and 5 surgeries. Since that day it has continued to grow and evolve with the changing needs of the community.  Madison Memorial Hospital was recognized as one of the top 100 small hospitals in the nation in 1994. Just two years later the hospital started another construction...
Admin Update  When danger lurks behind healthcare reforms, have no fear, admin is here. Highlights Employees of the Quarter Rand R. (Volunteer) Teamwork – I was singularly impressed with Rand’s willingness to give up his personal time to help at the Women’s Health Conference on October 11. On arrival, he immediately asked how he could be of assistance and did a phenomenal job throughout the day, managing class numbers and directing “traffic.” Rand was excited to be a part of this event – believing in its worth to the extent of bringing his mom, who was visiting from Utah, and his girlfriend so that they could benefit from the education offered. Even at the end of a long day, Rand stayed behind to restore rooms to their original state – helping to move furniture, materials, etc Rand was polite and helpful and I observed him on multiple occasions assisting conference...

Mental Health “Our attitudes control our lives.  Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad.  It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force.”  By Irving Berlin, a Russian immigrant to the United States– widely considered to be one of the greatest songwriters in American history.  Some of his more well-known songs were “White Christmas”, “There’s No Business Like Show Business”, “God Bless America”, and “Always”. From the New York Times best-seller, “The Reality-Based Rules of the Workplace: Know What Boosts Your Value, Kills Your Chances, and Will Make You Happier” by Cy Wakeman: “What does it mean to be “reality based”? Being reality-based is all about ditching the drama, because most of the drama in our lives has nothing to do with reality.  It’s the story we make up about reality.  For instance, if my boss...
Alma & Lydia Larsen Recently, Madison’s Family Maternity Center was named the Larsen Family Maternity Center in honor of Alma & Lydia Larsen. The Larsens generously contributed to the Madison Foundation for this naming opportunity. The foundation uses these funds to better serve the health needs of our community with our hospital. A few examples include the Family Maternity Center’s canopied entrance with heated sidewalks to keep families safe as they enter. Funds also were used to supply the Maternity Center with new and additional equipment. The generosity of the Larsen family not only honored their grandparents with this naming opportunity, but will bless children from around the world who are born at our specialized delivery center.   Alma & Lydia carried a legacy of faith, service, sacrifice, and dedication to their family and this community. Alma and his parents, who were Norwegian immigrants, were among the first settlers in the Rexburg area. Alma married...

Healthy Eating  “Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, and stabilizing your mood. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. It seems that for every expert who tells you a certain food is good for you, you’ll find another saying exactly the opposite. But by using these simple tips, you can cut through the confusion and learn how to create a tasty, varied, and healthy diet. – From Helpguide.org  Healthy eating tip 1:  Set yourself up for success  To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps rather than one big drastic change.  If you approach the changes gradually and with commitment, you will have a healthy diet sooner than you...
